Adobe, the global leader in creative software, announced it will soon release a mobile version of its Firefly AI image generator, stepping directly into the ring against rapidly advancing rivals like OpenAI and Runway. This announcement, made Thursday at Adobe's MAX Creativity Conference in London, reflects Adobe's strategy to embed AI deeper into its product ecosystem while expanding accessibility for creators on the go.
During the conference, Alexandru Costin, Adobe's Vice President of Firefly, revealed that the Firefly mobile app will soon be available on both iOS and Android platforms. Although an exact release date wasn’t shared, the company emphasized the vision of making Firefly a "creative partner" that fits in the pocket of every designer, marketer, and artist.
"Creative minds don't wait. They think on the move. Our goal is for Firefly mobile to sketch, brainstorm, and assist wherever inspiration strikes,"- Costin.
Use cases include quick brainstorming sessions during commutes, developing mood boards, or generating ad campaign ideas before even reaching the office.
With mobile device users expected to reach 7.7 billion globally by 2027 (Statista), Adobe’s move is perfectly timed to meet creators where they are — on their phones.
Alongside the mobile announcement, Adobe launched two new advanced AI models:
Additionally, the company made its Firefly Video Model — an AI-powered tool for generating video content from text prompts — generally available across its platforms.
These new models promise hyper-realistic image and video generation capabilities while adhering to commercial safety standards, ensuring no copyrighted material or intellectual property gets unintentionally used.
Key upgrades include:
According to Adobe, Firefly models have already generated over 6 billion assets since their beta release in 2023.
The timing of Adobe’s announcements is no coincidence. OpenAI, backed heavily by Microsoft, recently stunned the internet by integrating image generation natively into ChatGPT. Their viral model, capable of generating images in the style of renowned animation studio Studio Ghibli, created such massive demand that Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, humorously noted that their GPUs were “melting” under the pressure.
“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting,” Altman tweeted on March 27, 2025.
OpenAI’s launch signals a broader trend: AI-driven visual creativity is no longer niche — it's going mainstream fast. In 2024 alone, the AI visual generation market grew by over 70%, reaching a valuation of $3.5 billion (Allied Market Research).
Despite the fierce rivalry, Adobe isn't isolating itself. Instead, it embraces strategic partnerships with potential competitors, including Google, Runway, and even OpenAI itself.
“Competition is great,” said Costin. “There’s room for different models with different personalities and specialties. Partnering accelerates innovation and ultimately serves the evolving needs of creatives better.”
Rather than competing on a single model's strength, Adobe's plan seems to center around offering multiple AI options under one roof — giving creators flexibility, safety, and cutting-edge technology without vendor lock-in.
For investors, Adobe’s aggressive expansion into AI isn't just a defensive play — it's an opportunity. Adobe's total addressable market for AI-driven creative tools is projected to grow to $18 billion by 2027 (according to Grand View Research). As tech stocks continue riding the AI wave in 2025, Adobe’s latest moves could significantly strengthen its long-term position alongside giants like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Alphabet.
Adobe shares (NASDAQ: ADBE) have already seen a 12% year-to-date gain as of April 2025, partly fueled by excitement around its AI initiatives.
As Adobe marches forward with its Firefly mobile app and powerful new AI models, it’s clear that the company sees AI not as a threat, but as a future-defining opportunity. With competition from OpenAI, Runway, and others intensifying, creators — and investors — stand to benefit from an explosion of innovation in the coming months.
The real winners? The global creative community, which now has more powerful, mobile, and safe AI tools at their fingertips than ever before.
